Pontesbury & District Gardeners Association

PDGA was formed in 1942 with the aim of promoting gardening in the local area as part of the Dig for Victory campaign.

Now its main function is as a co-operative buying garden consumables in bulk and reselling to members at rates lower than are normally found in garden centres and other retail outlets. For example, each February we take delivery of an articulated lorry load of multi-purpose compost, we buy large bags of fertiliser and other garden consumables and bag it up in smaller quantities which are sold to members at a competitive prices.

We sell a soil improver, Pongarmulch, which is bought in bulk from the local council’s composting service and bagged up for ease of transport to members’ gardens.

We are able to do this because we are staffed by volunteers and don’t have the cash flow concerns that a normal retail business has. All this is located in an old railway shed by the old line in Pontesbury, and a view of the building itself is worth a visit. There is always someone available to carry heavy or awkward items out to your car.

The Trading Post is open every Saturday from 9.30-12 from the first Saturday in February to the last Saturday in October, except for the last Saturday in August when it is closed for our Show. It is situated in the Old Railway Buildings on Station Road in Pontesbury.
